چکیده

Heat assisted magnetic recording HAMR is a potential solution to extend the limits of conventional magnetic recording. In HAMR, the heating of the recording medium is achieved with a near-field optical transducer. Although the literature suggests novel transducers, there is little consideration of the optical and thermal aspects of the magnetic medium. In this letter we suggest a recording medium that provides a significant enhancement in optical absorption and localized heating. The thermal profiles of the proposed medium and the conventional medium are compared using finite element method solutions of Maxwell’s and the heat transfer equations. © 2009 American Institute of Physics. Signal Processing for Two-dimensional Magnetic Recording

With magnetic storage devices already achieving storage densities of up to 400 Gigabits per square inch (Gb/in), the state of the art is rapidly approaching theoretical limits (dictated by thermal stability concerns). Hence, there is an effort in the industry to develop alternative magnetic storage technologies. Two-dimensional magnetic recording (TDMR) is one such candidate technology. In cont...

Comparative study of optical near-field transducers for heat-assisted magnetic recording

Heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR), widely considered to be the next generation technology for high-density data storage devices, uses a tiny plasmonic antenna called a near-field transducer (NFT) to focus light down to a subdiffraction volume. This results in a temporary and local rise in temperature of the recording medium thereby reducing its coercivity, allowing the external magnetic f...

Plasmonic near-field transducer for heat-assisted magnetic recording

Plasmonic devices, made of apertures or antennas, have played significant roles in advancing the fields of optics and opto-electronics by offering subwavelength manipulation of light in the visible and near infrared frequencies. The development of heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) opens up a new application of plasmonic nanostructures, where they act as near field transducers (NFTs) to lo...
